Massachusetts Medical Waste Regulations

Infectious Waste
Infectious waste (sharps, blood & blood products, pathological wastes, cultures & stocks of infectious agents, and contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, or bedding) may be disinfected or incinerated at the site where it is generated, or shipped to another site for treatment and disposal.
Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) Status
VSQGs generate less than 220 lbs of hazardous waste per month and may accumulate up to 2,200 lbs for an indefinite period of time.
Large Quantity Generator (LQG) Status
LQGs generate more than 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste per month and may accumulate any quantity of waste on-site as long as it is shipped within 90 days.
Sharps Disposal
Medical facilities must grind up sharps, or otherwise have their physical hazard eliminated, before disposal.

New Process for Obtaining or Changing Your Hazardous Waste Identification Number (EPA ID) in Massachusetts

As of June 15, 2018, Massachusetts has moved to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) online application myRCRAid, which allows waste generators to apply for and obtain an ID electronically. The process is as follows:

Register as an RCRAInfo user. MassDEP will approve your electronic signature.
Login at RCRAInfo, access myRCRAid, and apply for an EPA ID by submitting a Site Identification Form electronically to MassDEP.
The agency will review your application, either approving it or asking you to make corrections re-submit it.
Once approved, MassDEP issues your EPA ID (generally within 7 days) through RCRAInfo. You are then authorized to proceed with regulated hazardous waste activities.
