Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) Definition
RMW is solid waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals, research pertaining thereto, or production/testing of biologicals.
RMW Classification
RMW falls into 7 classes: Cultures & Stocks, Pathological Waste, Human Blood & Blood Products, Sharps, Unused Sharps, Animal Waste, and Isolation Waste.
RMW Segregation Requirements
Generators must segregate RMW that will be transported off-site into categories: Sharps, Fluids, and Other RMW.
RMW Storage
RMW must be stored in leak-proof labeled containers and kept in a locked area with restricted access, with refrigeration if necessary. It must be protected from the elements, insects, and animals, and kept for no longer than 1 year.
Pathological Waste Disposal
Pathological waste (human or animal body parts, tissues, organs, and body fluids removed during surgery or autopsy) must be incinerated.

About New Jersey Regulated Medical Waste Generator Registration

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is one of the toughest state environmental agencies in the country, so it should come as no surprise that there are some tough waste management regulations to comply with.

While most states require only generators of hazardous waste to register for a generator identification number, the NJ DEP requires a registration for all generators of medical waste. Your generator identification number must accompany all shipments of medical waste leaving your facility, and it must appear on your annual medical waste generator report (which is required of all facilities).

No medical waste may be transported without a generator identification number. Any transporter that accepts and transports your waste without the number is in violation of state law, not only placing their license in jeopardy, but leaving your facility susceptible to serious penalties.
