Vicki Purugganan Regional Operations Director, AFC Doctors Express Urgent Care – NY & CT

We currently subscribe to BioServ Biomedical Management Solutions for all of our regulated medical waste and pharmaceutical management. We converted from another company last year for a variety of reasons. We have found BioServ very responsive to our needs, cost effective, efficient and cordial when coming into the facility, on the phone, or by email. We subscribe to their online education forum for new employees and annual training of current employees. I have recommend BioServ to other colleagues.

Our company has been with BioServ for a little over a year now and there are no other medical waste management companies that can compare with BioServ’s outstanding service. They are there when you need them without all the costly fees like other companies. I would recommend them to any company that would use medical waste management. Their company can’t be beat.

New York Medical Waste Regulations

  • Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) in NY
RMW includes infectious animal waste, human pathological waste and blood, cultures and stocks, and sharps.
  • RMW Storage
RMW must be removed from patient care areas within 24 hours, and from clinical laboratories within 72 hours. It must be kept in prominently labeled, leak-free containers in a sanitary, vermin- and insect-free storage area located away from pedestrian traffic.
  • RMW Disposal
Approved treatments include autoclaving, incineration, and alternative technologies. If accompanied by a certificate of treatment, RMW may be disposed at an authorized solid waste management facility.
  • Sharps Disposal
Sharps must be destroyed prior to disposal.

Pharmaceutical Contamination in New York’s Waters

In the past, both consumers and medical facilities flushed their unwanted pharmaceuticals. However, wastewater treatment plants cannot filter all medications-and as a result, low levels of many medications have been found in 80% of New York's rivers and streams. Continuous exposure to low levels of medications causes behavioral and physical changes in fish and other aquatic wildlife, and can contribute to the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

To combat this, some facilities dispose of medication in their medical waste collection containers, but this is not a more environmentally friendly method. Medical waste is typically autoclaved-a process which does not treat pharmaceutical waste. It is then shredded and sent to a landfill, where the medications can leach into the groundwater.

The only truly acceptable means of pharmaceutical destruction is incineration. BioServ has addressed this with a simple, cost-effective pharmaceutical waste management program, which guarantees 100% regulatory and environmental compliance for your facility. One of our experts will help you determine what type of pharmaceutical waste you have and then set you up with a management plan that fits your needs.

NY Medical Waste Disposal FAQs

What regulations apply in New York?
Medical waste disposal in New York is governed by state-specific regulations as well as applicable federal requirements from OSHA, the EPA, and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Healthcare facilities, dental offices, veterinary practices, laboratories, schools, and other medical waste generators must follow strict requirements for the segregation, packaging, labeling, storage, transportation, treatment, and documentation of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW). Facilities are also responsible for proper manifest tracking, recordkeeping, and understanding their cradle-to-grave liability for regulated waste. BioServ stays informed on regulatory updates to help healthcare providers safely manage their medical waste responsibilities.
How do you help maintain compliance?
BioServ helps healthcare facilities throughout New York manage medical waste safely by providing OSHA-compliant collection containers, scheduled Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) collection, DOT-compliant transportation, and Manifest of Waste Disposal documentation after each pickup. Our services support adherence to the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) by helping facilities properly handle sharps, infectious waste, and other biohazardous materials. Documented chain of custody and reliable waste tracking also help reduce cradle-to-grave liability.
What types of medical waste do you collect?
BioServ collects a broad range of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) throughout New York, including sharps waste, red bag waste, pathological waste, trace chemotherapy waste, pharmaceutical waste, laboratory waste, microbiological cultures, and other biohazardous materials. We support physician offices, dental practices, ambulatory surgery centers, veterinary clinics, schools, blood banks, laboratories, and long-term care facilities with waste solutions designed around their specific waste streams and operational requirements.
Do you provide sharps containers and collection supplies?
Yes. BioServ supplies OSHA-compliant, puncture-resistant sharps containers, red bag liners, biohazard containers, pharmaceutical waste containers, and other medical waste collection supplies for healthcare providers throughout New York. We help facilities select the right container sizes and service frequency based on their waste volume and daily operations. Proper segregation and appropriate containers help reduce exposure risks and promote safer handling practices.
How often can pickups be scheduled?
Pickup schedules in New York are flexible and based on your facility's waste volume, storage needs, and operational requirements. BioServ offers weekly, biweekly, monthly, and other service schedules depending on your location and the amount of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) generated. Flexible collection options help facilities manage waste efficiently while avoiding unnecessary storage concerns or service interruptions.
Do you offer emergency or on-demand service?
Yes. In addition to scheduled collection, BioServ offers emergency and on-demand medical waste pickup services throughout New York whenever possible. Whether your facility experiences an unexpected increase in RMW volume, a biohazard spill, or requires immediate removal of infectious waste or sharps, our team works quickly to arrange safe collection and transportation. This responsive support helps healthcare providers address urgent waste needs without disrupting daily operations.
What documentation is provided after each pickup?
Following each medical waste pickup in New York, BioServ provides the required Manifest of Waste Disposal and other applicable documentation. Our manifest tracking and chain-of-custody records provide verification that Regulated Medical Waste has been properly transported and managed. When applicable, customers may also receive a Certificate of Destruction or treatment confirmation to support inspections, internal records, and audit preparation.
What factors determine the cost?
Medical waste disposal pricing in New York depends on several factors, including your facility type, the volume and type of Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) generated, container sizes, pickup frequency, transportation requirements, and service location. Additional considerations may include sharps waste, pharmaceutical waste, emergency pickups, and specialized waste streams. BioServ works with facilities to identify an efficient waste management approach based on their needs and budget.
Which cities and regions do you serve?
BioServ provides medical waste management services throughout New York, serving healthcare providers in communities such as Syracuse, Camillus, Rome, Utica, Oswego, Fulton, and surrounding areas. We work with physician offices, dental practices, surgery centers, laboratories, schools, veterinary clinics, and other healthcare organizations across the state.
